Pete Van Neste

Head of Marketing

What I do at Pinpoint

👋 Hey, I'm Pete.

An entrepreneurial husband (soon to be dad), coffee drinking, cafe-with-a-view frequenting, self-confessed geek (I event installed Cat5 network infrastructure in my bedroom at age 13!). I’m a hunter not a farmer. I prefer the chase of a new customer to the operational delivery, or handling a long drawn-out sales process.

And I'm head of marketing at Pinpoint. We're a revenue-focussed team that cares about brand. My job is to:

  • Build a team of great marketers, that can help us build a big business, fast.
  • Generate enough pipeline to hit the revenue number.
  • Help sales close that pipeline.
  • Help Customer Success delight customers.

And to help you do the same.

Why Pinpoint

If you want to grow your career FAST, and leave with a story of how you made a HUGE impact, this is the place for you.

There's no limit on how quick you can learn, or what you can get involved with. Want to try something new? Go ahead!

Who am I?

I've spent the last 10 years growing businesses from zero to $millions in revenue.

The first proper business I ran was an sound system rental company that I started with one of my lecturers whilst at uni (studying Sound Engineering). At the end of uni I decided I wanted to get into corporate event production rather than band gigs (as corporate is much more profitable), so I got myself bought out and set up Stagetex with the proceeds.

I ran Stagetex from 2008 until 2016 when I found an exit through a trade sale. Why exit so early? I was increasingly interested in business rather than the operational side that attracted me to the industry in the first place. And I didn’t like the business model (commoditised market, high potential for operational liability (e.g. health and safety), low labour productivity, low ROCE, and low P/E ratio).

However, these businesses grew entirely through digital marketing and, after trying and failing to outsource to agencies, I had learned how to do it better myself. During my earn out period for Stagetex I consulted for the company that acquired us and grew their digital marketing to a point where it now generates between £100k and £1mm of new business leads per month.

Advice for prospective candidates

If you want a 9-5 job, this isn't for you. If you want to be spoon-fed, this isn't for you.

If you want to take responsibility for projects, think on your feet, and be part of a team that's growing fast, this is for you.

I look to hire people who are smarter than me, who I can trust, who bring balance to areas where I'm weak, and who I believe are the future marketing leaders at Pinpoint as we scale.

As a manager I care about (in no particular order):
  • Doing what you say you will when you say you will.
  • Taking initiative.
  • Being honest if you screw up (and taking responsibility for fixing it).
  • Asking for help when you need it.
  • Keeping your personal growth trajectory ahead of the business growth trajectory.
